Necesse Food & Cooking Guide|All Recipes, Best Dishes & Buffs by Use

“Do I even need to cook?” That’s exactly what I thought early on. I scraped by eating meat from hunting and whatever fruit happened to be lying around, until a boss fight stopped me cold and I finally got it. There are dishes that stack +10% all damage and +15% attack speed at the same time. Skipping food is leaving free power on the table.

This page lists every dish’s effect, ingredients, and how to get the materials. I’ve also sorted things by purpose — “what to cook early,” “what to eat before a boss,” “how to make mining less painful” — so feel free to read only the part you need.

Food Basics

Food in Necesse does two things.

  1. Buffs the player: attack, movement speed, max HP, mining speed and more rise for a set duration.
  2. Raises settler happiness: supplying food gives your settlers (NPCs) a happiness bonus, which lowers enchanting costs and improves facility efficiency (details in the Settlement Guide).

Food Buff Slots

You get 1 food buff slot by default. Eating a different dish overwrites the previous food buff.

To add slots you need the Battle Chef’s armor set (full set gives +1 slot → 2 total). The cap can be pushed all the way to 10 slots, but in normal play 2 is the realistic maximum.

In other words, “stacking multiple dishes” assumes Battle Chef gear. By default, you pick the single most effective dish for that boss fight and eat that one.

Food Quality and Settler Happiness

Happiness also climbs with food variety. Keep supplying the same dish and your settlers will complain that “my diet has not been varied at all.”

Just keeping several kinds of food stocked in the settlement changes happiness dramatically.

Build Your Cooking Stations

Cooking requires a station. Early on the Roasting Station alone is plenty; once farming starts, add a Cooking Pot, and by mid-game a Cheese Press opens up a huge range of recipes. Once you have Tungsten, the Cooking Station consolidates everything into one.

Roasting StationRoasting Station

Crafted AtMaterials
WorkstationAny Log ×10

The simplest cooking station, available from the early game. Drop in one piece of meat or fish and a roasted dish is done. Build it the moment you start hunting or fishing. Just 10 logs, so you can prepare it very early.

Cooking PotCooking Pot

Crafted AtMaterials
WorkstationClay ×10 / Iron Bar ×4

This station really comes alive once farming and animal husbandry are running. You can cook dishes combining vegetables, dairy, and meat, and it’s where the strong Gourmet-quality buff foods live. Clay is obtained by digging the ground.

Grain MillGrain Mill

Crafted AtMaterials
WorkstationAny Log ×20 / Wool ×10 / Iron Bar ×10

Processes Wheat into Flour. Plenty of dishes use Flour — bread, cookies, donuts, meatballs, all the pies. Build it alongside your wheat field. It needs Wool, so the timing roughly lines up with starting to raise sheep.

Cheese PressCheese Press

Crafted AtMaterials
Demonic WorkstationIron Bar ×5 / Demonic Bar ×5

Converts Milk into Cheese. Cheese is an ingredient in several dishes, so set this up early once you start raising cows. It needs the Demonic Workstation, so the rough timing is after clearing the Swamp Biome.

Cooking StationCooking Station

Crafted AtMaterialsFuel
Tungsten WorkstationTungsten Bar ×8 / Obsidian ×12Any Log

A direct upgrade that runs every Roasting Station and Cooking Pot recipe on a single station. This one device handles all food crafting.

It runs on fuel (logs). It’s a large 2-tile station, so the standard setup is to place it in the settlement’s food zone and let settlers do the cooking. The rough timing is mid-game and later, once Tungsten Bars are available.

Cooling BoxCooling Box

Crafted AtMaterials
WorkstationAny Log ×10 / Any Stone ×10 / Frost Shard ×5

A storage box that drops spoilage speed to 25% of normal (details below). Frost Shards are found in ice caves.

Best Food by Phase

Early Game (up to Evil’s Protector)

Before farming and livestock are set up, lean on materials from hunting and fishing.

Cheap, instant, and strong:

DishWhy
Roasted Rabbit LegRoasted Rabbit LegAll Damage +5%. Rabbits are everywhere on the surface
Roasted FishRoasted FishAttack Speed +5%. A bit of fishing and you can mass-produce it
Cheesy Beet BowlCheesy Beet BowlMining Speed +50%. Only 2 ingredients — Cheese (from Milk) and Beet
BreadBreadMade from field wheat alone. Max HP +20. Mass-produce it the moment you have a wheat field

I made a Roasted Rabbit Leg and went into Evil’s Protector with that 8-minute All Damage +5% active — the difference in damage genuinely surprised me. The sooner you start using food, the better.

Mid Game (up to Fallen Wizard)

Farming and livestock are starting to come together. The Cooking Pot lets you make Gourmet-quality dishes.

Main dishes for this phase:

DishPoint
CookiesCookiesAll Damage +5% plus Max HP +10. Made entirely from crops and livestock
MeatballsMeatballsAll Damage +5% plus Combat HP Regen +0.5. Few ingredients — Any Raw Meat ×1, Flour ×1, Tomato ×1

Mining & Cave Exploration

Higher mining speed widens the area you can dig, and the pace of ore collection changes dramatically.

Cheesy Beet Bowl is usable from early game and gives an absurd Mining Speed +50%. Cheese comes from Milk via the Cheese Press, so once you’ve secured chickens and cows, get cracking on it.

In Necesse’s wide world, just bumping up movement speed makes everything more comfortable.

12 Gourmet Dishes Your Settlers Make for You

Food happiness is decided by two axes: quality (Gourmet +35) and variety (12 types for +40). The end goal is to line up “12 Gourmet dishes that close out using only farmland and livestock.” Place a Cooking Pot in your settler zone and settlers handle everything from gathering ingredients to cooking, automatically.

All 12 source their ingredients from farmland and livestock alone. No hunting, no fishing. Sugar comes from a sugar beet field, and Cheese is made by feeding Milk into the Cheese Press.

Seeds are bought from the Farmer NPC, but chili pepper unlocks after Queen Spider, onion and pumpkin after Reaper, and banana and strawberry after Sage and Grit / Cryo Queen appear in the NPC shop. Every boss you beat adds more dishes you can cook.

Early on, the realistic route is to bank the variety bonus first with Fine-quality Bread, Hard Boiled Eggs and the like, then swap up to the 12 above one by one as you down each boss.

Fighting Food Spoilage

Food has a spoilage timer. Leave it alone and it goes bad and becomes unusable.

Build a Cooling Box and items placed inside spoil at 25% the normal rate (roughly 4× longer before spoiling). If you’re going to batch-cook a big stockpile, a Cooling Box is essential.

ItemDetail
Storage Slots40
Fuel Slots2
Spoilage Rate (with fuel)25% of normal (lasts 4× longer)
MaterialsAny Log ×10 / Any Stone ×10 / Frost Shard ×5
FuelCooling items such as Iceblossom

Just lowering the spoilage rate makes food inventory management far easier. Coming back from an expedition to find all your food rotted is the kind of experience you only need once.
