Necesse – How to Beat Mutant Hydra | Scrapyard Incursion Spawn Conditions, Attacks & Drops

Mutant Hydra is the new boss added in v1.3.0’s Rust & Romance Update. Like every other Incursion boss, you fight it by completing an objective inside a Tier 8+ Scrapyard Incursion and then stepping through the Boss Portal that spawns. At Tier 8, its HP is 254,400 (Classic) — the highest number of any boss so far. The main body never moves; instead, its four necks and heads attack independently.

This guide covers the steps to unlock the Scrapyard Incursion, HP and contact damage, the six attacks split across the four heads, the arena’s traps, and every drop. All numbers here come from v1.3.0’s game data. Where actual combat feel (how easy an attack is to dodge, how long the fight takes) hasn’t been confirmed firsthand, that’s called out separately in the text.

Mutant Hydra

What Is Mutant Hydra?

Mutant Hydra is the dedicated boss of the Scrapyard Incursion, set in a junkyard. Unlike the surface and underground bosses the Elder sends you after, Incursion bosses don’t have a dedicated summoning item. It works the same way as Crystal Dragon or Mother Slime: complete the Scrapyard Incursion’s objective (Hunting or Extraction) and a Boss Portal spawns on the spot.

Visually, it’s a huge mutated creature with four long necks. The main body never moves from where it spawned; instead, the four necks and heads move independently, splitting up sweeping strikes, pincer attacks, whip-like lunges, spat goo, homing goo sprays, and a roar between them.

The main drops to chase are the Bumper Car mount (in 6 colors) and two dedicated BGM Vinyls.

How to Unlock the Scrapyard Incursion

To reach Scrapyard, you need to unlock the Tier 8 Perk Feed the Machine… in the Fallen Altar’s Perk Tree.

As a prerequisite, you need to have cleared a Tier 7+ Crystal Hollow Incursion and already unlocked its Perk, Crystalline beauty… (if you’ve already reached Tier 8 Incursions, you should have met this already).

StepWhat to doCondition / cost
1Raise your Altar Tier to 7 or higherTier 8 Perks can only be bought once the Altar Tier is at least (Perk Tier − 1)
2Unlock Feed the Machine… for 1,010 Altar DustThe most expensive Tier 8 Perk
3Get a Gateway TabletYou get one free the first time you unlock this Perk; after that, Scrapyard joins the pool of tablets you can randomly receive

Note that this Perk is effectively the gate to Tier 8 itself. Until you buy Feed the Machine…, none of the other five Tier 8 Perks can be purchased.

Once you reach Tier 8, your first order of business is banking 1,010 Altar Dust. This Perk gives you a bonus Tier 8 Scrapyard Gateway Tablet the first time you unlock it — so before you worry about collecting tablets, the actual first step is saving up 1,010 Altar Dust.

The Feed the Machine... Perk unlock screen in the Perk Tree

If you’re short on Altar Dust, the Transmutation Station added in 1.3.0 can help. It converts 3 Upgrade Shards or 3 Alchemy Shards into 1 Altar Dust, so leftover Shards from Incursions can go straight toward this Perk (crafting instructions below).

Once you have a Tablet, place it at your settlement’s Fallen Altar to open the gate. Scrapyard only offers two Objective types — Hunting and Extraction — there’s no Trial.

  • Hunting: Kill enemies to collect Pristine Gear (drops roughly once every 2 kills)
  • Extraction: Dig up Fuel Skull Encasings — 25 are buried across the map

At the very north of the map, an Arena Entrance Portal is already in place for getting in and out of the arena. Once you complete the objective, a Boss Portal (a red gate) spawns inside that arena. Stepping through it starts the boss fight.

The Arena Entrance Portal, the permanent entrance/exit to the arena

The Boss Portal shows a remaining-attempts counter, capped at 5 by default (the same as every other Incursion boss). You don’t need to re-complete the objective — if you fail and still have attempts left, the next portal spawns automatically. A successful kill completes the Incursion outright, and the remaining count no longer matters. Failing all 5 attempts ends the Incursion.

PositioningStay near the arena’s centerTraps line the outer edge (details below)

Mutant Hydra is completely immune to knockback. Since you can’t buy distance by knocking it back, positioning is entirely on you.

Arena Traps Are Boss-Triggered

The arena is roughly 40×40 tiles. Along its outer edge sit 16 Flame Traps and 8 explosive barrels. These aren’t triggered by the player stepping on them — the boss itself keeps firing them throughout the fight.

  • Flame Traps: 4 fire in sequence every 2.5 seconds
  • Explosive barrels: 1 detonates in sequence every 5 seconds

All of them sit along the arena’s edge. Get pinned against the wall and you’ll be eating continuous fire and explosion damage on top of dodging the heads. The basic plan is to fight near the center and retreat toward the opposite side of the center, not out toward the edge. Note that these traps deal no damage to the boss itself.

The red barrels at the bottom of the screen are the explosive barrels; the sparks around them are the Flame Traps firing.

Stats

HP scales with both difficulty and Incursion Tier. Since Tier 8 is the minimum, the number you’re actually facing starts at 3.18× the base HP.

For comparison, Crystal Dragon’s base HP is 52,000 (Classic). Scaled to the same Tier 8, that’s 165,360 for Crystal Dragon versus 254,400 for Mutant Hydra — roughly 1.5× the durability.

Incursion enemy damage also scales with Tier — ×1.87 at Tier 8, ×2.15 at Tier 10. The “effective” column above is calculated at the Tier 8 multiplier (×1.87); actual damage taken will be reduced further by your own armor.

Attack Patterns & How to Dodge Them

Six attacks total. The four heads sit at top-left, top-right, bottom-left, and bottom-right, and each one handles a different attack.

1. Sweep / Spin

A head pulls back into position, then sweeps through an arc. Sometimes it swings vertically, sometimes horizontally, and either 2 or all 4 heads can do it at once. Since the head telegraphs by moving into position first, you can see which direction the arc will come from before it starts swinging — that’s the saving grace.

2. Pincer

Two heads close in from both sides at once. Your escape route is perpendicular to the pincer’s axis. There are three variants: the bottom two heads, the left two heads, and a double pincer with all four heads.

3. Whip Lunge

After a brief shaking wind-up, the head whips forward and lunges. It targets anyone standing in that head’s assigned direction within roughly 19 tiles. There’s also a block where all four heads whip at once — that’s when you have the least room to escape.

The wind-up length scales with the boss’s remaining HP — about 2 seconds early on, shrinking to as little as 0.5 seconds as its HP drops.

4. Spat Goo

The head tilts up and lobs green globs in an arc, which scatter and land within roughly 4 tiles of you. A single block fires 10 globs, rising to 12 as the boss’s HP drops, and the time to impact shrinks from 2 seconds to 1 second.

Spat goo scattering on the ground

The real problem is what happens after impact: the goo lingers as a puddle for 30 seconds, dealing damage every time you touch it. The longer the fight drags on, the more floor space gets eaten up, so you need to keep planning your movement toward clean ground instead of camping one spot.

5. Homing Goo Spray

After a big shudder, the head fires a stream of goo projectiles that home in on you. These have no hitbox for the first 0.75 seconds after firing, then curve as they track you. Their turning speed isn’t that high, so instead of running in a straight line, cutting sideways the instant a projectile gets close is the easier way to lose them.

6. Roar

This is the top-right head’s exclusive attack. A shockwave expands outward 25 tiles from the head, and getting hit doesn’t deal damage — it inflicts Hydra Deafened for 5 seconds instead.

The effect reverses your movement input — press up and you go down, press left and you go right. And since a Sweep or Whip usually follows right after a Roar, how you survive those 5 seconds is the make-or-break moment of the fight. Given the arena’s size, outrunning the shockwave isn’t realistic, so once you see a Roar coming, the call is either to stop trying to dodge and simply hold your ground for 5 seconds, or to consciously input the reversed direction to move where you actually want to go.

There’s also a block where the Roar fires three times in a row.

Attack Order Is a Fixed Loop

Mutant Hydra cycles through 8 fixed blocks in order. It’s not the type of boss where you never know what’s coming — learn the pattern once and you can prepare for it.

[One full loop] 1. Bottom 2 heads pincer + top-right spits/sprays 2. All 4 heads double sweep 3. Top-left & bottom-right sweep + top-right roars x3/spits/sprays + bottom-left sprays/spits 4. All 4 heads whip-lunge 5. Left 2 heads pincer + top-right sprays/spits + bottom-right whips 6. Bottom 2 heads vertical sweep + top-right sprays/spits + top-left whips 7. All 4 heads double pincer 8. Top-right & bottom-left spray + bottom-right sweeps/whips + top-left whips -> back to 1
[Key to the fight] 1. Don't hug the edges — traps line the arena's rim, and the boss fires them itself 2. Goo puddles linger for 30 seconds — plan your movement assuming floor space keeps shrinking 3. The Roar's 5 seconds reverse your movement — treat it as a "stop dodging and just survive" window

Gets Faster as HP Drops

This boss doesn’t switch phases at fixed thresholds — instead, its overall speed keeps climbing in direct proportion to its remaining HP.

Attack duration per block6s4s

Judging the difficulty by how easy it is to dodge early on is how you get caught out late. It’s safer to hold back healing on the assumption that the real fight starts once HP drops below 20%. In actual play, the boss does feel like it’s attacking faster the lower its HP goes, and that lines up with the data.

The measured fight length was about 3 minutes. That result came from strong post-final-boss gear, though, so depending on your gear Tier the fight could take longer.

Enemies in Scrapyard

Before the boss fight, you’ll run into 5 new enemy types along the way.

EnemyHPNotes
Mutant600115 damage from both contact and its goo attack. Shows up in numbers
Magechanic500Launches RC Toy Soldiers at you
RC Toy Soldier200Self-destructs for 300 damage — the single highest hit in this zone
Haywire Shredder400Very fast at 200 move speed, 90 contact damage
Furnace Golem2,500Armor 1,000 — attacks barely land on it under normal conditions

Furnace Golem needs a different approach. At baseline its Armor is 1,000, so real damage barely gets through. But as it overheats, its Armor drops, hitting 0 once it’s fully overheated. While overheated it deals fire damage to anything nearby, so the standard play is to wait it out and burst it down once it’s fully overheated. It drops Iron Ore and Copper Ore when killed.

RC Toy Soldier’s 300 self-destruct damage is higher than Mutant Hydra’s own contact damage (125). If you spot a Magechanic, dealing with the toy it sends first is worth prioritizing.

The two Vinyls rotate on a cycle and drop on average once every 4 kills. Getting both takes multiple runs.

Bumper Car is a mount with 200 move speed that boosts only while you hold the trinket-ability button. All 6 colors are purely cosmetic. Hitting top speed unlocks the “Speeding Ticket” achievement.

Incursion Rewards

Killing the boss also nets you the standard Incursion boss reward.

  • 20–25 Radiated Essence
  • A Gateway Tablet for the next Tier

Radiated Essence is the Tier 3 essence added in 1.3.0. Alongside Crystal Essence from Crystal Hollow (added at the same time), it’s a material used to upgrade Tier 8–9 gear — which is why Scrapyard is worth farming even if you’re not chasing the Bumper Car.

What to Do After the Kill

1. Decide What to Do With Radiated Essence

1.3.0 redefined which Tier of upgrade material covers which gear Tier, and Tier 3 essence now maps to Tier 8–9 upgrades. Check which Tier your essence stockpile actually covers before deciding what gear to upgrade.

2. Build a Transmutation Station

The Transmutation Station, built at the Fallen Workstation, makes a real difference in how efficient your Scrapyard runs are. It only costs 10 Tier 1 essence and 10 Alchemy Shards, so you can build it before you ever set foot in Scrapyard.

Here are the main exchange rates:

ConversionRate
Radiated Essence ↔ Crystal Essence3 → 1
Ascended Shard → Radiated Essence1 → 4
Radiated Essence → Tier 1 essence2 → 1
Upgrade Shard / Alchemy Shard → Altar Dust3 → 1
Altar Dust → Upgrade Shard / Alchemy Shard5 → 1
Upgrade Shard ⇔ Alchemy Shard3 → 1

Extra Radiated Essence can be converted down into Crystal Hollow materials or lower-Tier essence. And if you’re short on Altar Dust for a Perk, spare Shards can be converted into Dust instead. If you’re planning to farm Scrapyard, building this station first cuts down on wasted materials.

3. Plan Your Runs If You Want a Bumper Car

A 10% drop rate works out to 1-in-10 on average. Targeting a specific color stretches that out even further, so the realistic approach is to either accept that “getting one at all is good enough” without chasing a color, or farm it as a side effect of collecting essence.

There are two ways to get more Gateway Tablets:

  • Kill a Tier 7 boss: Incursion bosses guarantee a Tablet at “current Tier + 1” based purely on the Tier number. Since Scrapyard is the only Tier 8 biome, that guaranteed Tablet becomes a Scrapyard Tablet about 65% of the time.
  • Kill trash mobs inside Scrapyard: Tablets can rarely drop directly, and if they do, they’re already Tier 8 — i.e. Scrapyard.

FAQ

Q: Can I unlock the Tier 8 Perks in any order?

A: No. Until you unlock Feed the Machine…, none of the other Tier 8 Perks can be bought. The moment you reach Tier 8, your first goal is 1,010 Altar Dust.
