A ranged build lets you deal damage before enemies reach you. Its two essentials are simple: keep ammunition available, then stack ranged damage, critical chance and projectile speed.
The two pillars of a ranged build
- Never run out of ammunition. Bows and greatbows use arrows; guns use bullets.
- Scale ranged damage. Armor, trinkets and potions improve damage, critical hits and projectile speed without changing your weapon.
Melee can rely on defense while trading hits. Ranged play is about landing shots and building more value into every hit.
Bows, greatbows and guns
| Type | Ammunition | What it does best | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bow | Arrows | Balanced rate of fire and range | Your first ranged weapon and general use |
| Greatbow | Arrows | Heavy single hits and long range | Tough targets and safe boss damage |
| Gun | Bullets | Varied effects, piercing and rapid fire | Midgame onward and weapon-specific playstyles |
Bows and greatbows share arrows. Guns need bullets, but a few guns can occasionally avoid consuming ammunition. Start with a bow, then move into a greatbow or gun if its feel suits you.
Recommended weapons by progression
The damage below is each weapon’s base value before your ranged bonuses. Attack interval is the unmodified time between attacks; a smaller number means the next shot comes sooner.
| Progression | Weapon | Type | Damage | Attack interval | Why use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Early (Iron Anvil) | Bow | 20.0 | 0.6 sec | Reliable starting weapon | |
| Early (Iron Anvil) | Greatbow | 52.0 | 0.7 sec | A heavy early hit | |
| Midgame (Demonic Anvil) | Bow | 52.0 | 0.5 sec | Range 800 and steady fire | |
| Midgame (Demonic Anvil) | Greatbow | 85.0 | 0.6 sec | Range 1100 and strong single shots | |
| Midgame (Demonic Anvil) | Gun | 40.0 | 0.4 sec | First crafted gun; piercing bullets | |
| Late midgame (Tungsten Anvil) | Bow | 60.0 | 0.5 sec | A reliable range-800 bow | |
| Late midgame (Tungsten Anvil) | Greatbow | 160.0 | 0.6 sec | Highest base damage among crafted greatbows | |
| Endgame (Fallen Anvil) | Greatbow | 124.0 | 0.5 sec | Range 1600; explodes on impact | |
| Endgame (Fallen Anvil) | Gun | 125.0 | 0.6 sec | A hard-hitting crafted gun |
Early game: Iron Bow or Gold Greatbow
The Iron Bow teaches the ranged rhythm safely. If you want a heavier shot, the Gold Greatbow deals 52 damage—2.6 times the Iron Bow’s 20—from the same Iron Anvil.
Midgame: choose a weapon family
The Demonic Anvil offers all three routes. The Ivy Bow is the consistent bow option; the Ivy Greatbow trades speed for a range-1100 hit; and the Sapphire Revolver is the first crafted gun, firing piercing bullets. All three can carry you to tungsten gear, so choose by feel.
Late midgame and endgame
At the Tungsten Anvil, the Mycelium Greatbow’s 160 damage is 2.7 times the Tungsten Bow’s 60. No new gun is crafted at this tier; guns resume at the Fallen Anvil. For endgame, Night Piercer combines a range-1600 greatbow shot with an impact explosion, while the Antique Rifle provides a 125-damage gun shot.
Drop weapons are also worth using:
The Crimson Sky fires five arrows with right click; Ascended Bow fires arrows without consuming them; and the Sniper Rifle combines 125 damage with range 1600.
New v1.3.0 weapon: Patchwork Grenadier
Rust & Romance (v1.3.0, released July 30, 2026) added Patchwork Grenadier at the Fallen Anvil. This gun deals 130 damage, attacks every 0.5 seconds at range 800, and lobs grenades over terrain that explode on impact. Its late-game recipe includes Radiated Essence, obtained after progressing into the Scrapyard Incursion (tier 8 or higher). See the Rust & Romance Update guide for the wider update.
Use spare summon slots
Ranged weapons normally leave summon slots unused. Summon minions first with a regular summon weapon, then switch back to your bow, greatbow or gun: the minions remain active while you shoot. Their damage is summon damage, so decide how much gear to dedicate to it. See the Summoner Build Guide for that setup.
Weapons that do not consume a summon slot work differently: they must stay equipped to produce their effect, so they are not extra damage after you switch to a ranged weapon. See weapons that do not use summon slots for details.
Keep ammunition stocked
Use Stone Arrows early, then Iron Arrows once you have an Iron Anvil. Craft a reserve before a boss fight. Guns use bullets.
| Ammunition-saving option | Effect |
|---|---|
| 75% chance not to consume ammunition | |
| 75% chance not to consume bullets | |
| 50% chance not to consume bullets |
Armor, trinkets and potions
Start with Frost armor for ranged damage, critical chance and projectile speed. In midgame, choose Runic armor for critical chance or Gunslinger armor for gun-focused speed and six-shot set bonus. The Sharpshooter set is the key late-midgame ranged set: its hat adds +15% ranged critical damage, coat +10% ranged attack speed, and boots +20% projectile and movement speed.
For endgame, use Nightsteel Mask for critical-focused play or Spiderite Hood for +15% ranged attack speed and +15 armor penetration.
Sapphire Eyepatch is another fast-fire option (+25% ranged attack speed and projectile speed).
Useful trinkets are
Range Foci (+20% ranged damage, -20% other damage),
Ancient Feather (+50% projectile speed), Lucky Cape (+10% critical chance), Assassins Cowl (Lucky Cape plus Ancient Feather in one slot), Frozen Wave (+25% critical damage), and Bone Hilt (+20 armor penetration).
Before bosses, add Ranger Potion (+10% ranged damage), Accuracy Potion (+10% critical chance; +20% greater), Rapid Potion (+50% projectile speed; +100% greater), and a Battle Potion (+10% all damage).
Summary
| Stage | Weapon | Armor | Key support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early | Iron Bow / Gold Greatbow | Frost armor | Stone then Iron Arrows |
| Midgame | Ivy Bow / Ivy Greatbow / Sapphire Revolver | Runic or Gunslinger | Ancient Feather, Lucky Cape, Ammo Box |
| Late midgame | Mycelium Greatbow / Tungsten Bow | Sharpshooter | Range Foci, Assassins Cowl |
| Endgame | Night Piercer / Antique Rifle | Nightsteel Mask / Spiderite Hood | Range Foci, Frozen Wave, Bone Hilt |
Keep ammunition ready, then improve ranged damage and critical hits. That is the core loop that lets a ranged build keep dealing safe damage at the edge of the screen.
