Necesse Review 2026: Is It Worth Playing After the 1.0 Release?

The short answer: yes. Necesse is absolutely worth starting now, and this is the best state the game has been in.

Necesse left Early Access with version 1.0 in October 2025. Since then, its rougher balance issues have been cleaned up, and post-launch updates have continued to add features and fixes. As of June 14, 2026, Steam lists more than 27,000 user reviews with a Very Positive rating.

This review is based on playing from the opening tutorial through the main progression and deep into the endgame.

What Kind of Game Is Necesse?

Necesse combines a top-down 2D sandbox, colony management, and action RPG boss fights. It was developed by Fair Games ApS and fully released on Steam on October 16, 2025.

Fighting the Queen Spider

The easiest comparison is Terraria’s mining and equipment progression mixed with RimWorld-style settler management, followed by challenging boss fights. Its top-down perspective makes enemy projectiles and ally positions easy to read during combat.

Version 1.0 replaced the old island-hopping world structure with a seamless infinite world and significantly improved the visuals. If older gameplay videos made the game look a little too rough, the current version is worth another look.

Necesse supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck. Up to four players can share the entire progression in multiplayer.

There are more than 20 bosses, with difficulty rising steadily from the first major fight to demanding endgame encounters.

What Necesse Does Well

Boss fights reward preparation

The bosses do more than introduce new attack patterns. Each one gradually asks more from your arena setup, equipment, and movement.

The first boss, Evil’s Protector, teaches the basics without being overwhelming. By the time you reach Pirate Captain, simply wearing decent gear and attacking nonstop is no longer enough. Building a proper arena starts to matter.

The late-game bosses are on another level. I will avoid naming or spoiling them, but some looked impossible on the first attempt. Winning after several tries, changing equipment, and finding the strategy that finally works is one of the game’s best experiences.

Builds are flexible

Necesse has four main combat styles: melee, ranged, magic, and summoner. You can switch builds whenever you change equipment, so an early choice never locks you into one playstyle.

I used ranged weapons for most of my playthrough, but switching to magic for certain fights worked extremely well. The four styles also give multiplayer groups natural roles without forcing a strict class system.

Controls work well on both mouse and controller

Combat feels comfortable with either keyboard and mouse or a controller. Dodging attacks while moving and aiming feels natural on a gamepad.

Mouse controls are still better for sorting chests, building, and adjusting detailed settlement settings. Steam Deck and controller players can complete the game without problems, but switching to a mouse for intensive base management makes the process much faster.

Settlements are more than a side activity

You can recruit settlers with many different jobs, manage their happiness, and gradually turn a basic camp into a productive town. This is one of Necesse’s strongest features.

Managing settlers and work from the settlement menu

Settlers can organize chests, maintain a chosen stock of food and potions, manage animals, farm, cut trees, and join your adventure party. The more your settlement develops, the less time you spend preparing for the next expedition.

I initially built rooms wherever they fit. Once I started planning zones and pushing for maximum happiness, an hour disappeared almost immediately. The complete settlement and settler guide explains how the system works.

Multiplayer improves an already good solo game

Necesse is enjoyable solo, but playing with two to four people makes it even better. The entire game supports multiplayer, so a group can naturally split into roles such as melee, magic, farming, and settlement management.

Defeating a difficult late-game boss together feels dramatically better than clearing an ordinary co-op encounter.

What Could Be Better

The game does not eliminate every progression question

Necesse’s quests provide clearer goals than many sandbox games. However, you still need to decide when to upgrade equipment and which boss to fight next.

If you lose track of progression, use the beginner’s guide and the complete guide roadmap.

Difficulty rises sharply in the second half

Around the Pirate Captain stage, equipment that previously let you overpower enemies stops being enough. If the game suddenly feels much harder, it is usually time to upgrade your gear and improve your arena instead of repeating the same attempt.

Story is not the main attraction

Necesse has a setting and progression structure, but it does not tell much of its story through long conversations or cinematic events. Players looking for a narrative-heavy RPG may find it thin.

This is a game driven by systems, exploration, building, and combat.

Development Status in 2026

How Long Does Necesse Take?

Finish the tutorialAround 30 minutes
Defeat the early bosses5–8 hours
Complete the main progression20–30 hours
Reach deep endgame content50–80+ hours
Explore nearly everything100+ hours

A boss-focused playthrough takes roughly 30 hours. Reaching deep Incursion content can easily push that beyond 50 hours.

Who Should Play Necesse?

Necesse is a good fit if you:

  • Enjoy Terraria or RimWorld
  • Want boss fights that reward preparation
  • Like playing co-op with friends
  • Want a content-rich indie game at a low price

Necesse may not be for you if you:

  • Prefer story-heavy RPGs
  • Dislike top-down 2D action
  • Have no interest in settlement or colony management

Should You Start Now or Wait?

Reasons to start now

The version 1.0 balance pass removed many of the rougher Early Access problems. Guides and community information are easier to find, and the quest system gives new players a reasonable progression path.

The Secrets Update is already available, so new players immediately get the post-launch improvements and added content. Starting now also gives you time to progress before the larger summer update arrives.

Reasons to wait

The planned summer update may change world generation and other systems. Players who only want to begin after every major system has settled may prefer to wait for its release.

However, Necesse is still actively developed, so there may never be a single moment when all updates are permanently finished.
