Necesse Rust & Romance Update (v1.3.0): What’s New at Launch — Personalities, QoL, Romance & Endgame

Necesse’s major Rust & Romance Update launched on July 30, 2026, moving the game from v1.2.0 to v1.3.0 (Steam build 24475645). Settlers are no longer just workers who keep going as long as happiness is satisfied—this update turns them into individuals with personalities, a Quality of Life track, leisure activities, and romance.

Existing save files still load, and settlements keep working as before as long as settlers have rooms, beds, and food. That said, every biome has been rebalanced, and the developers recommend a new world to experience the new content fully.

Spoiler-Free: What to Do with an Existing Save

Existing save files still load, and you do not need to rebuild a settlement that already has rooms, beds, and food. Because every biome was rebalanced in this update, players who want to discover the new content for themselves may prefer to start a new world, as the developers recommend.

Spoilers Below: v1.3.0 Additions and Changes

The rest of this article names and explains the new systems, endgame content, bosses, and gear. Stop here if you would rather discover them in-game.

Why the Developers Made This Update

In an official developer video, the team lists three reasons for building the personality system: giving settlers a sense of individuality, making it rewarding to improve a settler’s treatment, and giving players a reason to be selective about who they recruit. Personalities split into two systems—perks that boost combat or work performance (melee, ranged, magic, summoning) and preferences for favorite jobs, furniture, and weather—and these feed into a new progression track called Quality of Life (QoL). Higher QoL boosts work speed, movement speed, and damage, but the bigger shift is that settlement optimization is no longer “done” once food, rooms, and gear are covered—it now extends to matching jobs to personalities, varying leisure activities, happiness objects, and romance. Large existing settlements are designed to keep running as before, as long as the basics—rooms, beds, and food—are in place.

If You Have an Existing Save, Do This First

  • Don’t rebuild your settlement. As long as settlers have rooms, beds, and food, everything keeps working as before.
  • Split shared rooms into private ones. The shared-room penalty now stacks up to -100, so multi-settler rooms are worth revisiting first.
  • Only re-check your upgrade plan. Gear-upgrade material Tiers were redefined (details below), so confirm which Tier your current materials map to before gathering more.

Existing Settlements Don’t Need a Rebuild

Even if you’re running a settlement with 50 or 100 settlers, you don’t need to rebuild everything just because personalities were added. As long as settlers have rooms, beds, and food, they keep doing their basic jobs as before. Matching furniture and job assignments to a settler’s preferences is an extra layer for players who want to push happiness and Quality of Life further.

At the same time, every biome has been substantially rebalanced in this update, and the Tier ranges used for gear-upgrade materials have changed (covered below), so you may need to rethink your upgrade plans depending on your progress. The developers recommend a new world to experience the new content fully, but how already-explored terrain in an existing world is handled hasn’t been detailed or confirmed yet.

Settler Personalities and Quality of Life

50 Personalities Across Two Systems: Ability and Preference

A total of 50 personalities were added for settlers, split into two broad systems.

  • Perks: traits that improve combat or work performance—melee, ranged, magic, summoning, and more
  • Preferences: likes for jobs, furniture, weather, collectibles, and other things that affect happiness

Recruiting every visitor used to be a safe choice with little downside. With personalities in place, there’s now a real reason to be selective about who joins your Adventure Party, who works the settlement, and who has the preferences you want. Four personalities are dedicated to romance, and the settlers who have them come with their own dialogue and storylines. Those four are distinguished internally by the game; they do not show up under their own names in a settler’s personality list.

Quality of Life: A New Home for Happiness

Each settler gains a new progression track called Quality of Life (QoL from here on), tied to happiness. From lowest to highest, its seven stages are Low (0), Mediocre (1), Decent (2), Good (3), Impressive (4), Wonderful (5), and Unrivaled (6).

The conditions for moving between stages are:

  • Keep happiness at 80 or above, and the settler gains one QoL stage every 5 minutes
  • Let happiness drop below 50, and the settler loses one QoL stage every 15 minutes

Each stage gives the settler a flat +5% to work speed, movement speed, and damage dealt, and these bonuses stack per stage—reaching Unrivaled (stage 6) works out to +30% total by simple addition. At the same time, each stage adds a continuous happiness penalty equivalent to -30 per stage, so sustaining a high QoL stage requires additional sources of happiness (preference-matched furniture, jobs, happiness objects, and so on) to offset it. There is no clear cap on the stage value itself, so the underlying number could in principle keep climbing past Unrivaled (stage 6)—but how that actually looks or behaves hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Leisure: Repeating the Same Activity Wears Off Its Effect

The old work-break system has been replaced with leisure activities—talking, relaxing, jogging, viewing art, watching the water, and listening to music. At base rates, the leisure gauge takes 30 minutes to go from full to empty, and 2 minutes to recover from empty to full (actual rates are adjusted for things like nighttime, conversation, and how much is left).

For happiness purposes, leisure activities fall into five broad categories (socializing, relaxing, exercise, beauty, and entertainment), and repeating the same category causes its effect to gradually wear off, dropping as low as 5% of its normal value. The higher a settler’s QoL, the slower that fatigue recovers. Switching categories recovers faster, while sticking to one activity doesn’t hold up for long. The developers’ phrase “6 different recreation activities” refers to the number of specific activities, which is a different number from the five happiness categories. Viewing art and watching the water both fall under the beauty category, which is why the activity count (6) and category count (5) are off by one.

When the leisure gauge hits 0, the settler becomes a strike candidate. During the day, the game checks every 7 minutes whether a strike starts, and once it does, it lasts 5 minutes.

The happiness penalty for settlers sharing a room has also gotten harsher. It used to cap at -50 no matter how crowded the room got; now it’s -20 per settler over the limit, stacking up to five times (-100). Private rooms matter more than before.

29 new happiness objects were also added. Even if a room has several objects, only one settler benefits from a given object at a time—rooms assign the highest-happiness objects to residents first. In a room with multiple settlers, you’ll need enough objects to go around if you want everyone covered.

Here’s how the acquisition sources break down:

SourceObjects
Expeditions (12)Lucky Rabbit’s Foot, Dryad Plant, Wizard Bookshelf, Sheep Chair, Champion Belt, Wooden Duck, Goblin Friends Painting, Slime Bench, Fishian Bathtub, Bear Rug, Pirate Carpet, Mossy Carpet
Deep cave expeditions (10)Friendly Bush, Parrot Perch, Fang of the Protector, Sarcophagus, Tropical Island Painting, Void Flame, Swamp Guardian Painting, Runebound Drum, Queen Egg Nest, Vulture Display
Incursion Tablet rewards (6)Spirit Basin, Pest Warden Lamp, Unmeltable Ice, Sage Pedestal, Grit Pedestal, Reaper’s Scythe Stand
DropCaveling Display — dropped by Cavelings at a 2.5% chance
PurchaseWitch Cauldron — sold by Witches

The official changelog describes this as 12 from expeditions, 9 from deep cave expeditions, and 7 as Incursion Tablet rewards (28 total either way). Our expedition count matches exactly, but we’re counting 10 for deep cave expeditions and 6 for Incursion Tablet rewards instead of 9 and 7. We haven’t been able to pin down which single object accounts for that difference.

The intro above says “29 new happiness objects” to match the official count, but the table adds up to 30. That’s because Sage Pedestal and Grit Pedestal are two separate pieces of furniture made from the same pedestal, which the official count treats as one. Mining Trip expeditions also draw from both the expedition and deep-cave-expedition pools, so a single mining trip can turn up objects from either group in the table above.

Each object’s exact happiness bonus is shown in its own in-game description once you place it — this article doesn’t compile those values into a single list.

Personalities, QoL, and leisure are covered in more depth — including what they actually look like in the settler info screen, how to tell perk tags apart, and the QoL badge — in Necesse 1.3.0 Settlement Changes, which also covers what to prioritize first in an existing settlement.

Romance

Give a Pretty Flower to Start Dating

Giving a Pretty Flower isn’t enough on its own. The dialogue option only appears once the target settler’s Quality of Life has reached Decent (stage 2) or higher, and you’re carrying a Pretty Flower at the same time. Only when both conditions are met does the “Give them a Pretty Flower?” option appear when you talk to that settler, and choosing it begins dating. Settlers still at Low or Mediocre QoL won’t offer this option even if you’re holding a Pretty Flower. Once you have a Pretty Flower, you can craft a Pretty Bouquet from your inventory or at a workbench. Your first Pretty Flower comes as a reward from the “Recruit a Settler” story objective when you start a settlement; after that, you can buy more from the Exotic Merchant or Stylist for 600–950 coins.

A settler's reaction to being offered a Pretty Flower

The confirmation screen you get when you hand over the flower already tells you that you can only have one Life Partner at a time and that dating several settlers at once doesn’t give you any bonus.

The confirmation screen shown right when you start dating a settler

Any settler can be a romance target, and a handful of settlers have dedicated romance personalities with their own unique dialogue and storylines.

Every Few Days, You Can Go on a Date

Once you’re dating a settler, you can visit them every few days to spend time together. Talking to a settler while they’re doing a leisure activity opens a special dialogue with the choice to join in or say you can’t right now. Each activity comes with its own back-and-forth dialogue for that settler.

Becoming a Life Partner Moves the Relationship Forward

Once a relationship has progressed far enough, an option appears to make that settler your Life Partner. The confirmation screen explains a few rules:

  • If you’re dating other settlers, their dating progress is paused once you commit (it isn’t erased)
  • If things don’t work out, you can break up later

In multiplayer, several players can date the same settler at once. In that case, only one of the competing players can become that settler’s Life Partner.

Once a settler becomes your Life Partner, a “Life Partner” tag is added to their personality list, and a new “Kiss” dialogue option appears. Kissing grants a temporary buff that raises max health, so it’s worth kissing your partner before heading into the caves. A settler who has become your Life Partner is also shown in a “happy” state, which feeds into their QoL.

If you want to end things, you can buy Divorce Papers from the Elder.

Endgame: The Tier 8+ Scrapyard Incursion

How Incursions themselves work — opening tablets, raising your Tier, and the Perk Tree — is covered in the Incursion Guide. Here we only cover what’s new in this update.

For endgame content, a new Incursion set in a scrapyard was added at Tier 8 and above. It brings five dedicated enemies, a new boss called Mutant Hydra, and two dedicated music tracks. Defeating Mutant Hydra drops one of six Bumper Car mounts. Spawn conditions, attack patterns, and the full drop list are covered in How to Beat Mutant Hydra.

Two new Tier 3 essences were added: Crystal Essence from the Crystal Hollow, and Radiated Essence from the Scrapyard. The Transmutation Station, built at the Fallen Workstation, converts between Essence, Shard, and Dust.

Two early summon weapons were added: the Hive Scepter, craftable at the Iron Anvil, and the Bat Cage, craftable at the Demonic Anvil.

Four Endgame Weapons and New Armor

The Fallen Anvil adds one new endgame weapon per combat style.

  • Melee: Rev Sword — attack speed increases the longer you keep attacking; it also works for woodcutting
  • Ranged: Patchwork Grenadier
  • Magic: Pyromancy — leaves a long trail of fire along its attack path, burning enemies that touch it and lowering their defense while increasing damage taken
  • Summon: Ignition Key — occupies every summon slot you have to summon a single mountable junk mech; the mech’s damage scales with how many slots it occupied

At the Tungsten Anvil, you can craft four Makeshift armor sets and the Phoenix armor set. The Phoenix set can trigger once every 5 minutes: instead of taking a killing blow, it protects the settler in an egg, then unleashes a fiery explosion on recovery.

A new mini-biome, Charred Forest, appears on the surface, home to two dedicated enemies, a phoenix, and golems made of ash.

Also added: the boss-summoning item Message in a Bottle and four new hairstyles. The Frozen Berry and Dragon Egg pets aren’t tied to a settler personality—they come from the “Fluffy friends!” Incursion perk (unlocked at Tier 10), which gives Incursion tablet rewards a chance to include pets (the Caveling Display and Witch Cauldron are covered in the table above). Four new achievements were added too, covering the top Bumper Car speed, becoming a settler’s Life Partner, recruiting a settler with 6 or more personalities, and getting 10 settlers to Unrivaled QoL at once.

The exact acquisition steps, real performance numbers, and drop rates for all of the new weapons, armor, and essences above are still unconfirmed.

Changes That Affect Existing Players

  • Gear-upgrade material Tiers were redefined. Tier 1 Essence now covers Tiers 1–4, Tier 2 Essence covers Tiers 5–7, Tier 3 Essence covers Tiers 8–9, and Ascended Shard covers Tiers 9–10. High-tier Incursion tablets can reward Tier 3 Essence, and Crystal-tier weapon upgrades also require Crystal Essence.
  • Settlement quests and the old tutorial were replaced by Story Objectives.
  • Crafting an Upgrade Station or Salvage Station no longer requires Essence.
  • Raiders now have much higher HP but deal less damage and move more slowly—fights against them last longer instead of ending in a few hits.
  • Sharks no longer spawn inside settlement boundaries. Falling icicles deal less damage to settlers, and settlers now get a short hit-cooldown similar to the player’s.
  • Door and fence-gate rotation was reworked so they can be placed adjacent to each other without needing to rotate first.
  • The “Cloud Nine” achievement is now based on QoL instead of happiness.
  • Beyond that, a large number of bug fixes landed, covering things like infinite dashing and room/valid-space detection.

A Note on Japanese Localization

At launch (August 1, 2026), many of the headline new features still fell back to English text in the Japanese version, including Quality of Life and its seven levels, the settler information bars, Pretty Flower, Ignition Key, Pyromancy, Rev Sword, the Makeshift and Phoenix armor sets, and the Scrapyard content. On August 11, 2026, the official Japanese localization added a large batch of translation entries. Every item above now displays an official Japanese name in-game, as do all 50 personality names and all 30 happiness furniture pieces. Comparing the two language files entry by entry, 6 of 7,528 keys have no Japanese text, and only three of those put English on screen: the Scrapyard Boss Entrance object, the Companion Locket tooltip, and the description text for the “ Enthusiast” personality (the personality name itself is translated). The Charred Forest biome name is a separate case: no name string exists in either language file, so how it appears in-game is unconfirmed.

The Japanese version of this article carries a lookup table pairing each English string with its official Japanese name, updated to reflect the August 11 localization pass.

The Free Weekend Has Ended (It Ran Through August 3)

To coincide with the update’s launch, Steam ran a free weekend from July 30 through August 3, 2026. That window has closed, so the game is back to a normal purchase. Check the Steam store page for future free weekends and sales.
