When you can’t beat the next boss, check your equipment tier before blaming your skill. Necesse is built around a loop where each boss unlocks the next workbench and the next set of materials — and sometimes pushing two tiers ahead is more efficient than grinding through every intermediate set.
This guide maps out every craftable armor set organized by anvil stage. For each set you’ll find the defense total, compatible build type, how to get the materials, and the boss or zone it’s meant to carry you through. This isn’t a “just use the best armor” guide — it covers every set so you can decide where to invest based on your playstyle: grinding every tier, or skipping ahead to the next unlock.
The Defense column is the combined total across all three pieces (helmet + chest + boots). Enchants, upgrades, and set bonuses are not included. Sets with multiple helmet variants show a range.
The Target column is the suggested zone or boss to aim for with that set. Too many losses in a row? Upgrade one tier. Want to play on the edge? Drop one tier and see how far you get.
Iron Anvil Stage: Game Start → Evil’s Protector
Available workbench: Iron Anvil
Upgrade signal: If Evil’s Protector is giving you trouble, consider pushing to Frost or Gold + Spider before the fight.
Available Armor Sets
| Image | Armor | Build | Defense | How to Get | Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leather | Ranged | 4 | Gather animal materials on the surface | ||
| Cloth | Magic | 4 | Gather sheep and cloth materials on the surface | Early exploration | |
| Copper | Melee | 5 | Mine copper ore underground | ||
| Iron | Melee | 7 | Mine iron ore underground | ||
| Gold | Melee / Summoner | 10–13 | Mine gold ore underground | Evil’s Protector | |
| Soldier’s | Melee / Ranged | 12–13 | Combine underground ores with surface leather materials | ||
| Spider | Summoner | 6 | Gather materials from spider caves and spider enemies underground | ||
| Frost | Melee / Magic / Ranged | 14–16 | Gather materials in snow biome and snow underground |
Copper and Iron are stepping stones — fine to skip if you’re farming materials anyway. That said, if you enjoy the gradual build, going Copper → Iron → Gold → Frost is a natural progression. If Evil’s Protector keeps beating you, upgrading to Frost or switching to a Summoner setup tends to make a more noticeable difference than just patching Iron one tier higher.
On my first clear, Gold Crown + Spider Staff as a Summoner mix gave the most consistent results. The defense numbers look low on paper, but extra summons let you focus entirely on dodging instead of attacking.
What Evil’s Protector Unlocks
Boss guide: How to beat Evil’s Protector
| Unlocked | Description |
|---|---|
| Demonic Anvil | Crafted from 12 Demonic Ingots. Opens the next equipment tier |
| Demonic Crafting Table | Required for processing higher-tier materials |
Available armor sets jump significantly after Evil’s Protector. You don’t need to craft every Iron Anvil set before the fight — just enough to win, then move straight to the Demonic Anvil.
Demonic Anvil Stage: Post-Evil’s Protector → Pirate Captain
Available workbench: Demonic Anvil
Upgrade signal: This stage spans a lot of bosses — invest in at least one solid main-build set.
Available Armor Sets
| Image | Armor | Build | Defense | How to Get | Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shark | Melee | 16 | Gather materials near ocean and coastal zones | ||
| Demonic | Melee | 19 | Gather Demonic materials after Evil’s Protector | Queen Spider | |
| Void | Magic / Summoner | 15–19 | Gather Void Fragments and wool | Void Wizard | |
| Thief’s | Ranged | 18 | Gather gem-type materials underground | ||
| Bloodplate | All-build | 19 | Combine Demonic Ingots with bat wings | ||
| Arachnid | Summoner | 12 | Gather materials from spider caves and Queen Spider | ||
| Runic | Melee / Magic / Ranged / Summoner | 19–28 | Mine Runic Stone in deciduous forest underground, gather cloth scraps | Runebound Chieftain | |
| Pharaoh’s | Magic | 34 | Gather materials in desert biome and desert underground | Ancient Vulture | |
| Ivy | Melee / Magic / Ranged / Summoner | 27–41 | Gather materials in swamp biome and swamp underground | Swamp Guardian | |
| Quartz | Melee / Summoner | 34–48 | Gather Quartz materials in desert underground | Pirate Captain | |
| Gunslinger | Ranged | 43 | Gather Quartz materials in desert underground |
This stage has the most bosses in a row: Queen Spider, Void Wizard, Swamp Guardian, Runebound Chieftain, Ancient Vulture, and Pirate Captain all share this equipment tier. Letting upgrades slip compounds quickly.
For efficiency, Quartz, Ivy, Gunslinger, or Pharaoh’s are the most cost-effective targets. If you want to feel each upgrade step, slotting in Shark, Arachnid, Void, and Runic along the way gives the tier-by-tier progression feel.
What Pirate Captain Unlocks
Boss guide: How to beat Pirate Captain
| Unlocked | Description |
|---|---|
| Deep Underground Ladder | Grants access to the Deep Underground layer |
| Tungsten Ore | Minable in Deep Underground |
| Tungsten Anvil | Crafted from Tungsten materials and Obsidian — the next workbench |
If you can beat Pirate Captain, stop crafting Demonic Anvil sets and head to Deep Underground instead. This is the first major “skip ahead rather than keep grinding this tier” decision point in the game.
If you have Miners, after clearing Queen Spider, Swamp Guardian, and Ancient Vulture you can send them on expeditions for Frost, Ivy, and Quartz materials — making second-build sets much easier to put together.
Tungsten Anvil Stage: Post-Pirate Captain → Simple Invasion
Available workbench: Tungsten Anvil
Upgrade signal: Accidents start happening in old Demonic Anvil gear. If Reaper or later bosses are two-shotting you, it’s time for Deep Underground equipment.
Available Armor Sets
| Image | Armor | Build | Defense | How to Get | Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tungsten | Melee | 64 | Mine Tungsten Ore in Deep Underground | Reaper | |
| Shadow | Magic / Ranged | 42–46 | Gather materials from Shadow areas and enemies in Deep Underground | ||
| Soulseed | Summoner | 40 | Gather materials from swamp caves and glowing cave areas | ||
| Glacial | Melee / Summoner | 44–64 | Gather materials in snow biome Deep Underground | Cryo Queen | |
| Deepfrost | Ranged | 56 | Gather snow biome Deep Underground materials, combined with base set | ||
| Cryo Witch | Magic + Summoner | 52 | Gather snow biome Deep Underground materials + post-Cryo Queen drops | ||
| Dryad | Melee / Magic / Ranged / Summoner | 50–70 | Gather materials in deciduous forest Deep Underground | The Cursed Crone | |
| Mycelium | Ranged / Summoner | 52–70 | Gather materials in swamp biome Deep Underground | Pest Warden | |
| Widow | Magic | 62 | Gather swamp Deep Underground materials and spider cave materials | ||
| Ancient Fossil | Melee / Summoner | 60–80 | Gather desert Deep Underground materials + drops near Sage and Grit | Sage and Grit | |
| Sharpshooter | Ranged | 74 | Gather desert Deep Underground materials + drops near Sage and Grit | ||
| Ancestors | Magic | 62 | Gather deciduous forest Deep Underground materials + Ancient Fossil materials | Fallen Wizard |
This is the longest stage — covering Reaper, Cryo Queen, The Cursed Crone, Pest Warden, Sage and Grit, and Fallen Wizard. Trying to push through in old Demonic Anvil gear gets risky fast. Upgrade your main build when you first enter Deep Underground.
On Tungsten itself: it’s a solid bridging set for Melee, but if materials flow well, jumping straight to Ancient Fossil, Dryad, or Sharpshooter is usually more time-efficient.
A few material timing notes worth tracking:
- Ancient Fossil and Sharpshooter both require Ancient Fossil materials plus drops from near Sage and Grit — they’re not available right at Reaper
- Ancestors also requires Dryad-type materials on top of Ancient Fossil — not an immediate post-Reaper option
- Cryo Witch becomes available after defeating Cryo Queen
- Widow unlocks once you can farm Mycelium materials in swamp Deep Underground
Miners can gather Tungsten via expeditions after you defeat Reaper. The very first Deep Underground run — right after Pirate Captain — requires you to go down yourself. After that first exploration, delegation becomes possible.
What Simple Invasion Unlocks
Boss guide: Simple Invasion guide (coming soon)
| Unlocked | Description |
|---|---|
| Abyss Anvil Materials | Collected from Simple Invasion rewards and drops |
| Abyss Anvil | The final craftable workbench |
| Endgame Material Routes | Opens access to Crypts, Spider Castle, and other late-game farming zones |
Once you hit Simple Invasion, the armor philosophy shifts. Craftable and drop-exclusive sets start mixing, and Ascension upgrades enter the picture. From here, special effects matter more than raw defense numbers.
Abyss Anvil Stage: Post-Simple Invasion → Endgame
Available workbench: Abyss Anvil
Upgrade signal: Ascension-first mindset — choose sets based on special effects that match your weapon, not the highest defense total.
After Simple Invasion, you’re no longer climbing a linear defense ladder. Ascension upgrades let you scale the same set over time, so the real question becomes: which set’s special effects fit my weapon and playstyle?
Main Craftable Sets
| Image | Armor | Build | Why Pick It | How to Get | Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slime | Melee / Magic | Magic gets bouncing projectiles; Melee gets bonus summons and recovery scaling | Farm Slime materials in late-game slime zones | Mother Slime | |
| Nightsteel | Melee / Magic / Ranged / Summoner | Per-build scaling on crits, recovery, and summon count | Farm materials during Simple Invasion | Night Swarm | |
| Spiderite | Melee / Magic / Ranged / Summoner | Strong attack speed, pierce, and summon count — reliable endgame workhorse | Farm materials in late-game spider zones | Spider Empress | |
| Dusk | Magic / Summoner | Moon disc attacks + max mana and summon count scaling | Defeat Moonlight Dancer three times | ||
| Dawn | Melee / Ranged | Fires solar projectiles on each attack | Defeat Sunlight Champion three times | ||
| Crystal | Melee / Magic / Ranged / Summoner | Helmet choice sets the bonus: Melee damage, Magic damage, summon attacks, or piercing shots | Farm materials from Simple Invasion and late-game zones | Crystal Dragon |
Pick the set whose special effect amplifies what your current weapon already does. Defense values at this tier are close enough that Ascension upgrades will level things out over time.
Side Picks
| Image | Armor | Build | Why Pick It | How to Get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ravenlord’s | All-build | Bonus damage scales with movement speed | Farm Ravenlord’s materials in late-game raven zones | |
| Arcanic | Magic-leaning | High mana regen and max mana, plus melee attacks add lightning | Farm Arcanic materials in late-game areas |
Drop-Only Sets
| Image | Armor | Main Use | Why Pick It | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aged Champion’s | Melee | Strong recovery scaling, reliable sustain | Use if it drops — don’t pause progression to farm it | |
| Battle Chef’s | Food buff builds | Expands food buff slots | Niche use, not for general combat progression | |
| Supporter | Multiplayer support | Boosts HP and mana recovery for nearby allies | Low priority for solo play |
Drop-only sets are “use if they drop” items. None are worth stalling progression to farm. Build your main Abyss Anvil set first.
How Miners Change the Equation
If you’ve hired Miner settlers, any unlocked ore or material type can be collected via mining expeditions. This changes how equipment upgrades feel.
On a first playthrough, you need to dive into each cave yourself. But once you’ve cleared a boss and opened a material route, you can delegate future runs — making second-build sets and alternate armor far less of a grind.
| Approach | Best Progression Style |
|---|---|
| Play through each tier | Craft each stage’s armor before the next boss, self-gathered |
| Efficiency-focused | Don’t over-craft; push to the next boss unlock as soon as you can win |
| Miner-assisted | Use expeditions for unlocked materials; save alternate builds for after first clears |
This guide lists every set so you can adapt to your approach. Playing slowly and crafting each tier is a valid experience. If you want to move fast, identifying the “unlock and move on” threshold for each boss is where most of the time savings come from.
When to Upgrade vs. When to Skip
Upgrade Now If…
- You’ve lost to the same boss 3 or more times
- You’re dying in 1–2 hits
- The fight drags so long your focus breaks down
- The next workbench-unlocking boss is still several fights away
In those cases, upgrading your current tier is almost always faster than grinding more attempts at the same boss.
The biggest upgrade-or-die checkpoints: before Evil’s Protector, before Pirate Captain, and before Simple Invasion.
Skip Ahead If…
- You’re already dealing 50%+ of the boss’s health before dying
- Deaths are dodge errors, not damage taken
- The next boss drops a new workbench or material route
- Farming cost is high and you’ll replace the set immediately anyway
Here, skipping the intermediate tier and pushing through with potions, food buffs, and arena prep tends to be more efficient.
Weapon Upgrade Logic
Defense isn’t the only number that matters. Weapons follow the same upgrade logic.
| Situation | Weapon Adjustment |
|---|---|
| Boss HP barely moves | Upgrade weapons before armor |
| Surviving fine but running out of time | Move to higher attack speed, projectile speed, or DPS weapon |
| Getting killed in melee range | Switch to Ranged, Magic, or Summoner temporarily |
| Want to focus purely on dodging | Add a Summoner weapon for passive damage output |
On my Evil’s Protector first clear, switching to a Summoner weapon made a bigger difference than upgrading armor would have. Sometimes changing your attack style beats stacking defense.
Summary Checklist
□ Before Evil's Protector — have Frost set or Gold Crown + Spider gear ready
□ After Evil's Protector — craft the Demonic Anvil
□ Pre-Pirate Captain — pick a main build from Quartz, Ivy, Gunslinger, or Pharaoh's
□ After Pirate Captain — use the Deep Underground Ladder and start collecting Tungsten Ore
□ Deep Underground — aim for Ancient Fossil, Dryad, Sharpshooter, or Ancestors by build type
□ Simple Invasion — collect Abyss Anvil materials from rewards
□ Endgame — craft one set that matches your weapon's special effects; don't chase raw defense
□ Drop-only sets — use if they drop; don't stall progression farming themWhen you’re stuck, the answer is rarely “build the single strongest set available.” It’s usually “which set is worth the farming cost at this stage.” Sometimes that means one tier up. Sometimes it means skipping two tiers and pushing through.
Use the tables above to cross-reference your current workbench, the next target boss, and what the materials cost. That’s the calculation this guide is built around.
